Painting Painting Impressionism
Gladys Awad
Professional Artist
My name is Gladys Awad; born and raised in Lebanon where I grew up and influenced by the beauty of the mountains and the four seasons where pine trees stretch high to reach the sky and the fragrance of the shy wild flowers hiding between the rocks spread while spring waters softly run through the creeks to quench the thirst. The Beqaa Valley with its rich fertile soil is surrounded by gigantic mountains to the east and west, like guardians, wearing the snow on their peek summit most time of the year.
This colorful natural mosaic of beauty made me discover art in my soul and inspired me to start painting at an early age. When the war broke out in Lebanon during 1975, like most Lebanese my dad chose Dubai, UAE as the next family destination. When the family returned to Lebanon I enrolled in Lebanese University; Faculty of Fine Arts but continued to create paintings despite the harsh realities of war and its misery providing myself an escape from the painful realities surrounding me and running towards a fantasy world full of imagination, creativity, beauty and peace. While at school I engaged myself in various activities including art exhibitions and poetry. Upon graduation from university I worked at an interior design and architect firm where I was introduced to antique effects and aging on furniture and walls, giving homes and islands bohemian styles and looks. I also used brass sheets, cutting and hammering material and creating a unique design and structure for picture frames and mirrors. I participated also in several art exhibitions.
When the family settled in United States back in 1989, I worked in different fields but continued to paint and faux finish on furniture and murals. I also started liking to work with oil and acrylic media which led to a deep attachment to impressionist artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne etc… all from the 18th and 19th centuries. My art subjects are mostly the ruins, ordinary common daily lives and activities. I like my creative work and paintings to embody and express the history and culture of the Phoenician heritage and Lebanese godly nature and landscape.
